About Me

I am a PhD Candidate at Brandeis University in the Department of Anthropology. My dissertation research is focused on how health is articulated in charismatic church communities in Samoa. I will begin long-term fieldwork in September 2011. I have conducted four preliminary research trips in Hawaii, American Samoa, California and Samoa.

Research Assistant to Alessandro Duranti, January-May 2010: Analyzed and organized Samoan data on prayer, provided literature reviews, and worked with translator on transcripts.

Preliminary Research, Project Title: “Agentive Fasting: Food Practices, Christianities, and Samoans in California and Samoa,” 2010: Conducted ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation in churches in Samoa and California. Formally interviewed 20 individuals. Conducted 5 group interviews with groups of 5. Recorded and transcribed everyday household activities.

Preliminary, Project Title: “Samoan Medicine: Healing and Treatment Choices through Narrative,” 2009: Conducted ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation in American Samoa. Formally interviewed 25 individuals, multiple meetings. Administered a village survey, 80 participants. Conducted informal and unstructured interviews daily. Administered a food-recall survey to 15 individuals.

Preliminary Research, Project Title: “Food, Feasting, and Embodiment: Dealing with Chronic Illness and Maintaining Social Relationships in Hawaii,” 2008 and 2009: Conducted ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation in the greater Honolulu area. Administered survey to 40 participants. Conducted formal and informal interviews with 25 participants, multiple meetings. Recorded and analyzed cultural performances. Conducted 24-food recalls with 15 participants. Worked closely with a translator.
