It is extremely difficult for US citizens who are not in academia to access theses and dissertations published in the United States. However, it is even more difficult for non-US citizens to access these manuscripts. Likewise, most non-US theses and dissertations are unavailable to people in the United States. The research included in these manuscripts took years to conduct and complete. Although some of these works eventually turn into published monographs, many “lay on the shelf collecting dust.” When someone wants to read your manuscript, the companies that theses and dissertations are often submitted to will reproduce your thesis/dissertation electronically and in print, but only at a cost. These companies charge not only university libraries, but also reproduce and sell your manuscript to individuals who do not have a full subscription to a corporate thesis/dissertation database. "Will I still own the copyright to my thesis/dissertation?" YES! Popular Anthropology Magazine does not ask contributors to give up their copyright to either the magazine or to the databases. Each person that contributes their thesis/dissertation retains full rights over their publication.
